Photojournalism was my initial passion that got me into photography. Growing up in San Francisco Chinatown, I marveled at the Arnold Genthe's, Old Chinatown photographs which hung at the old Tao Tao restaurant. The occassional window display at Tin Bow Tong herb shop where Harry Jew displayed his black and white panorama shots of Chinatown fascinated me. Kem Lee's photographs of community events graced every community newspaper. With the rising social consciousness of the mid '60's while in high school, I saw the uniqueness of my community and became involved in photographing community issues.
Later as a student at San Francisco State University, I studied and admired the works of famous photojournalists such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Dorothy Lange, Lewis Hine, Eugene Smith and Robert Capa motivated me to travel for long periods in Asia to photograph on my own. The Decisive Moments section is my forever work in progress, documenting the Asian American community. The Travels to the East are images from my adventures in Asia. Have camera will travel.
